The Current Adoption Environment
With Florida law ending racing in the state’s twelve tracks at the end of 2020, the racing industry continued to decline in 2021 and fewer dogs are bred for racing. Single tracks in Iowa and Arkansas closed in 2022, leaving only the two dog tracks in West Virginia open in the U.S. with no planned closing date. Greyhound adoption groups in the U.S. have responded in a variety of ways to the reduction in domestic greyhounds needing adoptive homes.
How Is Greyhound Pet Adoption Northwest Responding To Availability Of Greyhounds For Adoption?
We received our last group of dogs from Florida tracks and Kansas breeders in January of 2021. Since then, we have begun importing greyhounds from Ireland and Australia. Both countries have an oversupply of retired racers and adoption is not that common. Our Mission is to place greyhounds bred to run in loving adoptive homes, no matter their origin.
Some U.S. adoption groups have expanded to include other sighthounds such as Spanish galgos, and other groups are focusing on rescue of racing greyhounds in countries without animal welfare laws. GPA is exploring these additional options as well.
GPA Northwest continues to take in previously-adopted greyhounds needing re-homing, whether adopted from our organization or another adoption group.
